How About a bright and zippy
New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc
at a great price?!?!?
This week's selection : Makara Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough New Zealand, 2013, a bracingly good SB that screams for ersters, I mean oysters, ceviche, chevre, or other lighter fare.
The steep cliffs of Makara Coast overlook Cook Strait, which separates the North and South Islands of New Zealand and connects the Tasman Sea with the South Pacific Ocean. The vineyards are strongly influenced by this maritime climate, and Makara wines manifest the unspoiled landscape of New Zealand, with purity of flavor and distinctive regional character.
Makara Sauvignon Blanc is grown in Marlborough, which is split into two distinct river valleys, each contributing stylistic differences to this delicious wine.
The Wairau Valley has a warmer climate, with shallow, stony and fast-draining soils. 70% of the Makara blend is from the Wairau, a more inland location. Characteristics of passion fruit, flint, gooseberry, grapefruit and tropical fruits are what make the Wairau Valley unique.
The Awatere Valley is the smaller of two sub-regions and lies east of Wairau. It's a similar climate, however there is lower rainfall and cooler temperatures. The Awatere Valley is characterized by a distinctly crisp and herbaceous style, with marked minerality that complements and balances out the Wairau fruit.
Gently crushed and pressed, the juices are all cool settled before being racked. Following a long cool fermentation, the young wine is left to age on light leeds prior to blending. Ripe, vibrant fruit aromas of gooseberry and grapefruit, with an overriding fragrant sweetness reminiscent of specialty NZ honeys.
In the mouth is plump, smoothly textured and round before the signature juicy acids find and define the edges. Bright, fresh flavors of lime citrus, tropical fruit and crisp, green capsicummirror the nose, while flavors of herbaceous smoke and refreshing grapefruit linger on the finish.
Delicious - passion fruit and citrus zest. Very bright. Smooth and round palate with signature acidity. Fresh lime and jalapeño linger In the finish
Wine Enthusiast: "varietally on target. Gooseberry and pink grapefruit aromas and flavors finish on a mouthwatering note"
